Wave of Support by ICMS for Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches (SLSSNB)

April 30, 2024

The six-year ongoing sponsorship by ICMS of the Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches (SLSSNB) clubs helps protect the approximately 3 million beachgoers who annually enjoy the stunning Northern Beaches coastline.

SLSSNB is a volunteer organisation with a membership base of around 18,000, with an active patrolling membership of approximately 7,500.

Over the past season, from September to the end of April, volunteers spent close to 145,000 hours patrolling the 21 beaches of the branch, carrying out 27,000 preventative measures and actions.

This valuable service to beach goers is supported by sponsors such as ICMS, in line with the college’s ethos of supporting the community in which it is based.

“ICMS has 2000 students from all over the world. Keeping them safe on the beaches is critical for us and for the community. Our partnership with Sydney Northern Beaches Lifesavers provides crucial funding to support this volunteer organisation, and we are happy to be in a position to help,” ICMS President Rowan Courtney-O’Connor said.

ICMS branded marquees as part of the sponsorship not only provide shelter for the lifesavers, but is also a visible sign of the security, trust and loyalty that they provide to all beach goers.

“The sponsorship helps in maintaining their patrol hours, first aid initiatives, surf rescues, and, most importantly, in saving lives while ensuring the safety of our local beaches,” Courtney-O’Connor said.

“Teaming up with SLSSNB is a great chance to connect with our brand values and reputation in the community.”

Northern Beaches central to ICMS student experience

The ICMS Northern Beaches Campus overlooks the very beaches protected by SLSSNB, and students from the City Campus in Sydney also enjoy swimming, surfing and sun bathing on the 21 beaches that stretch from Manly to North Palm Beach.

“By working together, we can use our connections and resources well to reach more people, boost our presence, and benefit from this strong partnership,” Courtney-O’Connor said.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community, particularly with our students enjoying the beaches on our campus’ doorstep, and with many of them being volunteer lifeguards as well.”

The symbiotic relationship between the ICMS community and SLSSNB is the reason why the ongoing sponsorship and scholarship partnership is such a success.

“Our partnership with ICMS over the past six years has made a real difference,” SLSSNB CEO Tracey Hare-Boyd said.

“Their support, like supplying branded tents for our volunteer lifesavers and creating the SLSSNB Scholarship, has helped us keep the beaches safe.

“This teamwork shows how working together towards beach safety and community well-being can truly make a difference.”

SLSSNB Scholarship a Boost for ICMS Students

Alongside the sponsorship of marquees, ICMS has partnered with SLSSNB to add the Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Scholarship to the ICMS Professional Scholarship Program.

The scholarship awards a tuition waiver valued at up to $10,000 plus an internship with Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches with an amount of $300 paid each week to the successful candidate during the internship.

This is open to ICMS Bachelor of Business, Business (Sports Management) or Event Management students.

“Winning the Sydney Northern Beaches Lifesavers Scholarship is a game-changer for me, and a great way to learn more about industry while giving back to the community,” Lachlan Small, winner of the 2024 SLSSNB Scholarship, said.

“It will not only provide me with new skills and experience but also open doors to opportunities that will shape my future career in remarkable ways.”
