Discovering Future Trends in Event Management

ICMS believes in giving students real world experiences to prepare them for the professional working environment, this includes having industry expert lecturers and taking students on excursions to enhance their understanding of concepts learnt in class. Master of Event Management students were treated to an industry immersion at the International Convention Centre Darling Harbour, Sydney (ICC) to attend the Hospitality Design Fair & No Vacancy Trade Expo, incorporating education sessions with industry through leaders on topics such as, sustainability and future trends in event management.

Lecturer Katrina Denoux toured postgraduate students through the venue, with online students having equal opportunity to attend through live virtual links facilitated by the lecturer. This allows for both in-person and online students to interact and ask questions at the event in a ‘Blended-Synchronous’ delivery format.

The Hospitality Design Fair showcased the future trends in event management through exploring the interior designs of hotels, bars, restaurants and clubs. The event is exclusive to Australia, therefore allowing for attendees, architects, owners, and designers to discuss their work and create strong network systems.

Similarly, the NoVacancy Hotel Expo is an annual event for professionals to network and discuss future trends within the industry. The event focuses on the development of new brands and product launches.

The exhibition was also held on World Exhibition Day, meaning the Exhibition & Event Association Australasia (EEAA) were holding their annual celebrations at the ICC.

Overall, the students enjoyed visiting the professional site and being to interact with the various levels of event and hospitality management. Through teaching students how to make industry connections through excursions like this, they are able to deepen their understanding of large event logistics, and new trends in the luxury hospitality sectors.

The introduction of hybrid events such as Hospitality Design Fair & No Vacancy Trade Expo, align with the integration of ‘Blended-Synchronous’ classes ICMS has developed, taking learning experiences to a new level of flexibility. This has allowed for more interaction between not only domestic and international students but also for domestic students who are limited  by travel. ICMS has recently partnered with Merge Technology to provide students with further opportunities to collaborate in a classroom with one another through technologies such as Commbox and Catchbox.

Master of Event Management

The ICMS Master of Event Management is designed for working professionals seeking formal qualifications, as well as students seeking exposure to best practice within the event sector. It is a postgraduate degree that aims to develop strategic thinking and conceptual, analytics and current, practical skills.

Successful events can result in sustainable social, economic and infrastructure outcomes and are emerging as a key strategy for communities coping with globalisation and the new economy. Underpinning a strong emphasis on the international event sector, the Master of Event Management is designed to develop strategic management skills and knowledge that may be applied to the delivery of events in a range of local, national and global settings

The Master of Event Management consists of the following:

• 12 x Subjects of in-depth coursework studies
• 2 x Subjects of Work Integrated Learning, where you will work with an organisation in your industry for 600 hours and apply your knowledge to real business issues. (Students who have already  worked, or who are currently working, within their industry of study may be eligible to receive Recognition of Prior Learning for these subjects. Refer to Policies and Procedures for more information.)
• Delivery through a combination of small lectures, tutorials, workshops and industry research to cater for a range of learning styles.
• Australian and New Zealand students may wish to accelerate their course and complete in 1.3 years.
• The full-time 2-year course duration means international students are eligible for a two-year post-study work visa.*
