ICMS Is Participating In The NSW International Student Arrivals Plan

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said international students are a vital missing piece in the State’s economic recovery, with the sector worth $14.6 billion in 2019.

This will benefit tens of thousands of NSW residents whose jobs rely on this industry across retail, hospitality and many other fields.

The pilot plan will initially see a limited number of students from a range of countries returning to purpose-built student accommodation adhering to the same quarantine requirements as all incoming travellers.

“This won’t come at the expense of returning Aussies. We will continue to bring back 3,000 people per week – well more than any other state,” Mr Perrottet said.

“We are reassured by the NSW Government’s approval of the pilot for the safe and measured return of international students. This pilot proposal has taken over a year of work by some very committed people and strictly adheres to the government’s protocols and conditions.  It is an highly developed plan and we are proud to be involved. We take the responsibility with great importance and will do everything it takes to ensure the students safety and the pilots success.” Chairperson ICMS Professional Scholarships, Ann Whitelock.

ICMS chief executive officer Rowan Courtney-O’Connor said “well done to the NSW government for their proactive approach in supporting international education. These steps in the right direction to having international students return to Australia to continue their studies shows us that NSW cares, and we appreciate this.”

This collective effort will be funded by industry, with the governance and operational oversight of key NSW Government agencies – including NSW Health, NSW Police, with coordination by Study NSW – and the endorsement of the Australian Government.

The NSW Plan has been formally submitted to the Australian Government for review.
