Academic Integrity

At ICMS, Aspire Institute, Aspire English and the International Sport College of Australia (ISCA), we endeavour to create a culture of academic integrity. We do this by encouraging and supporting our students to meet the academic standards and learn with honesty.

What is Academic Integrity?

Academic integrity at ICMS refers to the adherence to the ethical and moral principles and values that are expected of all staff, students and other members of the academic community, by acting with honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility in the pursuit of knowledge.

At ICMS, academic integrity involves a commitment to a range of ethical practices, such as:

• Honesty: being truthful and transparent in all academic work, including research and writing;
• Fairness: giving proper credit to the sources of information used in research and writing, and avoiding plagiarism;
• Trust: working with others in an ethical and responsible manner, and acknowledging contributions appropriately;
• Respect: treating others with respect and valuing diverse perspectives and opinions;
• Responsibility: taking ownership of one’s own work, being accountable for one’s actions, and following ethical guidelines and standards set by ICMS.

ICMS believes that academic integrity is essential to the credibility and trustworthiness of the Institution and academic community as a whole, including students, thus maintaining the integrity of assessments and awarded qualifications.

At ICMS, we expect you to have a good understanding and adhere to the policies, procedures, and code of conduct on academic integrity:

Enhancing Academic Integrity – How It Works

At ICMS, we aim to:

• promote an ethical and honest culture in order to assure the quality of the Institution’s qualifications;
• educate staff and students on academic integrity as a means to prevent academic integrity breaches;
• promote good practices to maintain academic integrity standards;
• address academic integrity breaches (both current and historical) consistently, robustly and promptly.

We identify four categories of academic misconduct:

1. Warning
2. Level 1: minor and unintentional
3. Level 2: intentional
4. Level 3: serious and intentional

Our approach to artificial intelligence (AI)

ICMS has considered the academic integrity response to artificial intelligence (AI) tools and updated the Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures in 2022. The revised policies and procedures and a new Academic Integrity Partnerships model are now part of business as usual to ensure the integrity of ICMS degrees. As our context is evolves, we will implement further meaningful measures as needed.

Advice from Australian Government on Generative AI

Independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education TEQSA (Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency) has issued guidelines for students around the usage of generative AI or AI, and supports higher education institutions, such as ICMS, in the appropriate response aimed at safeguarding academic integrity.

Academic Integrity Module on Moodle

You will need to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) on Moodle if you are studying at ICMS. This short introduction course will help you better understand ICMS’ commitment to academic integrity. It is designed to offer training on key aspects of academic integrity, and it is interactive, engaging, and self-paced, making it easy for you to fit it into your busy schedules. This Module takes about 30 minutes to complete.

• New students: you will be automatically enrolled in the AIM. When you log in to Moodle, you will be able to see the module on your dashboard.
• Current students: if you are required to complete the AIM, you will need to enrol yourself with the self-enrolment code provided.

Promoting Academic Integrity

At ICMS, a variety of resources and services are available to assist you in meeting the academic standards necessary to successfully complete your courses.

• Workshops: workshops are offered to help you with your writing skills and practise
• One-on-one consultations: you can book an appointment with our friendly academic advisors to talk about assessment preparation and time management strategies;
• Style Guide: online resource to guide you through APA referencing and writing skills; you can find the Style Guide on the Moodle home page;
