Subject Aim:
This subject encourages students to commit to developing themselves as ethical and authentic leaders in contemporary organisational contexts. The subject aims to deepen students’ understanding with respect to how to:
- Better understand oneself, others, teams and leading in organisations.
- Manage complex relationships at work and appreciate individual differences particularly stemming from ethics, values, goals and trust.
- Gain insights into interpersonal relationships and the benefits of diversity to organisational outcomes.
- Manage oneself towards authentic leadership by becoming more attuned to the dynamics of decision-making, freedom, commitment and responsibility.
- Identify problems and solutions by clarifying issues and roadblocks.
- Overcome conflict through building group commitment, persuading and negotiating.
- Understand how to lead individuals and teams including mentoring and coaching.
- Develop a personal model of leadership (PLM) that is ethically sound and contemporarily based.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of leadership.
- Critique the implications of individuals and organisations adopting differing leadership styles.
- Analyse how reflective behaviour, including emotional and social intelligence, can effectively contribute to problem-solving in an organisational context.
- Evaluate the critical elements of modern day leadership practice that enables the development and maintenance of high performance workplaces (HPWs).
- Create a personal model of leadership (PML) that encapsulates a contemporary approach to 21st century leadership, underpinned by strong ethical behaviours.
