French football fan Gabriel de Sousa is in the middle of the FIFA Women’s World CupTM action in his role as brand ambassador, all thanks, he says, to an ICMS internship.
Gabriel, a French Study Abroad student, completed his Work Integrated Learning (WIL) subject in a media communications role with FIFA in Sydney between April and July this year.
“I was working for media operations with FIFA for my first internship, and because of that I managed to get a job during the FIFA Women’s World Cup as a Brand Ambassador,” Gabriel said.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023TM runs from 20 July through to 20 August, and features 32 teams of the top football players from around the world.
“It was the perfect opportunity and perfect internship because when I go back to France I will have a lot of experience and that will definitely open up big doors for me from big brands.”
Gabriel has always loved football. Even while studying ICMS Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) subjects in Australia he has played the sport, turning out for Brookvale FC in Manly.
Getting an internship with FIFA, and then this Brand Ambassador opportunity in the midst of a global football event, has been beyond what Gabriel imagined when he applied to Study Abroad at ICMS.
“I always played or watched football in some way and FIFA is the biggest football/soccer organisation in the world. Working for them was just a dream. Being this young and having this kind of opportunity is just incredible.”
Gabriel thanked his ICMS lecturer at the time, Chris Mamo, who, he said, believed in him and persisted in getting Gabriel the FIFA internship that was beyond what he imagined possible.
“From the beginning, when I was struggling, through to the end, I can really say a big thanks to ICMS, and Chris Mamo, because they helped me and they never gave up on me,” Gabriel said.
ICMS, located in Northern Beaches, Sydney, NSW, and in the city of Sydney, is known for its mentoring approach, supporting students in their ambitions and aspirations – just as Gabriel experienced.
“When I leave Australia and return to France I will have great experience on my resume. When I came to Australia, I didn’t think this was possible. The whole environment in Australia is great – to study, to do sport, to do everything.”
Considering his nationality, Gabriel is hoping France or Portugal will win the FIFA Women’s World Cup but, then again, he would also be happy if Australia won as the host country (with New Zealand).
Whichever team wins the final honours, one thing is for sure: coming all the way from France to study at ICMS in Australia was a winning move for Gabriel.
