Q&A with ICMS Fashion Interns at The Iconic

Q&A with ICMS Fashion Interns at The Iconic

May 22, 2024

Lucinda Hickson and Indigo Kelly, along with two other ICMS Bachelor of Business (Fashion and Global Brand Management) students, recently got the opportunity to intern at popular online fashion store The Iconic.

This four-month internship lets students get real-world experience in online shopping and fashion marketing.

By interning at The Iconic, ICMS students learnt a lot about the fast-paced fashion industry from experienced professionals, helping with analysing trends and creating social media posts.

This experience allowed them be more creative, innovative, and apply what they’ve learned in class to succeed in the fashion world.

We asked Lucinda, picture left above, and Indigo, pictured right above, what they gained from the experience.

Q: Could you share what it was like interning at The Iconic and how you got the internship?

Lucinda: “The Iconic is a huge company with a pretty incredible reputation, and I thought it would be a great experience to intern there. I got this internship through my lecturer, lecturer, Cara Wiggins, with the help of the ICMS Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program.

As well as lecturing, Cara also works at The Iconic in the buying and planning department, and she really helped me secure this opportunity at The Iconic.

It’s such a fast-paced environment that has given me a lot of valuable industry experience.

Indigo: After attending a buying and planning class taught by Cara, I landed the internship. This opportunity gave me a clear picture of what to expect and the responsibilities that come with it.

This internship has really boosted my confidence. It pushed me to work on my communication skills and trust in what I can do. It made me believe in myself more and feel more confident when facing new challenges.

Watch Indigo share how she got the internship at The Iconic, how she experienced it, and why she recommends ICMS if you want to build a career in fashion.

Q: How have you applied what you learnt in ICMS coursework to The Iconic internship?

Lucinda: As a fashion student, I’ve learned a lot about fashion buying and planning from Cara’s class.

Styling and trend research classes have been really helpful too.

Being here has taught me that real-world experience can teach things that classrooms can’t.

It’s all about trusting myself, using what I’ve learned at college, and being confident in what I know and what I still need to learn.

Q: Tell us more about what you learned at The Iconic?

Lucinda: “During my time at the Iconic for my internship, I’ve learned so much.

Specifically in own brand buying; I’ve gotten hands-on with the design process and managing samples.

Watching how a piece of clothing goes from an idea to a drawing, then a physical sample, and finally getting sold on the website has been exciting.

In terms of design, I learned how The Iconic team studies trends, adapts them for their brand, create the designs, sends them off for production, refines the samples, and then releases them online for customers to buy.

This internship has given me a full picture of the fashion process, which is something I didn’t fully grasp in my fashion courses.

Q: How did The Iconic internship influence the career path you want to take in the fashion world?

Lucinda: My experience at The Iconic has really strengthened my love for the fashion world.

I was already interested in this field, but the internship has made me especially excited about jobs like being a buyer.

Seeing how designs are created and managing samples has opened my eyes to new possibilities for my career moving forward.

Indigo: Ever since starting at ICMS, I’ve uncovered so many job possibilities in the fashion world that I never knew existed. The program has really opened my eyes to the different career paths available in this industry.

I didn’t even know buying was a pathway you could go into.

Now I’m pretty excited to learn more about it and see where it could take me.

Q: What are your thoughts on the fashion and business mix offered by ICMS?

Lucinda: Studying fashion and business together at ICMS has been really rewarding. The wide range of subjects has taught me useful skills that I can use in different jobs. The business part of the course especially has given me important workplace manners and tips on how to manage things, getting me ready for my future career.

Indigo: For work placements, here’s what I’d say: Take them seriously and be open-minded. Chat with everyone, be easy to talk to, and keep a friendly vibe.

Even though it’s all about your career, don’t forget the social side.

Making connections and networking is key, so stay open, get involved, and make the most of every moment during your placement.

Q: What does A Day in the Life of a Fashion Intern at The Iconic look like?

“After starting our day with a quick coffee in the city, we head over to The Iconic.

“Setting up our laptops, we dive into reviewing the morning’s sample deliveries.

“Whether storing them or having models try them on for adjustments, our mornings are always bustling with activity.

“Throughout the day, we do research, create mood boards, and manage various sample tasks that pop up.

“We play a big part in helping the designer in the creative process, bringing our skills and ideas to the team and pitching in on projects and goals.

“We recently visited ALX, the hub where all the online store photoshoots take place. It was an exciting experience for us both.

“During our time at ALX, we had the chance to closely examine the clothing, assist the models, and collaborate with the stylist and photographer.

“Being hands-on in this process was not only educational but also incredibly enjoyable.

“Witnessing the behind-the-scenes magic of how the website images are produced was truly enlightening.

“Understanding the teamwork and effort required to capture the perfect shot highlighted the collaborative nature of bringing a vision to life in the fashion industry.

“The dynamic work environment keeps us constantly adapting to changes, presenting us with new challenges to tackle.”
