Rabbitohs Roles for ICMS Scholarship Winners

July 5, 2019

A pair of International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) HostPlus Scholarship winners working at South Sydney Rabbitohs describe how the opportunities presented by the award-winning higher education institution and the ICMS Professional Scholarship Program have given them the platform from which to launch their careers in the sports industry.

HostPlus, an industry superannuation fund for the hospitality, tourism, recreation and sport industries in Australia, is one of over 1000 industry partners aligned with ICMS. The company is a key partner in the ICMS Professional Scholarship Program which this year has awarded scholarships worth in excess of $1 million dollars so far, with two ceremonies still to be held. Last year, 82 scholarships worth $1.2 million were awarded to current and prospective ICMS students, both domestic and international.

Lauren Sullivan, a 2018 HostPlus Scholarship winner, student ambassador and second year ICMS Bachelor of Sports Management student, is completing her internship at the Rabbitohs, working part-time over two semesters, while ICMS Class of 2017 alumnus Teli Taktikos is currently an Account Executive – Partnerships at Rabbitohs.

“ICMS gave me the opportunity to apply for a HostPlus Sports Scholarship, which I was awarded in February 2015, which in turn led to an opportunity to work as a Sponsorship and Fan Development Intern with the South Sydney Rabbitohs through HostPlus,” Taktikos said.

“Essentially, ICMS has given me the pathway to success and all I have had to do is work hard and follow the path.”

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are a professional Australian rugby league team based in Redfern, a suburb of Sydney, NSW. The team participates in the National Rugby League premiership and are one of nine existing teams from the state capital.

Sullivan perceived her internship as “an excellent opportunity for me to learn the workings of a successful sports organisation and develop vital skills that are needed in the sports industry.”

“At the moment I am working in the Ticketing and Membership section at the Rabbitohs. Over the next six months, I will be working in all areas of the department including Corporate and Sponorship, Events, Merchandise, Digital Media and Communication, and the High Performance department,” Sullivan said.

Industry training is a vital part of every degree and diploma offered by ICMS, located in Northern Beaches, NSW. Having practical experience built into courses alongside academic theory translates into a high rate of graduate employability, with nine out of ten ICMS students #alreadyhired before they graduate.

Sullivan reckoned the HostPlus Scholarship, with the internship that came with it, was her ticket to fulfilling a career in her field of interest.

“I am passionate about sport and working for the Rabbitohs is the opportunity of a liftime,” she said. “I am learning so much and enjoying the challenges every day brings.”
