Study Abroad Partner Suny Plattsburgh Close to ICMS CEO’s Heart

The two institutions have partnered to promote a successful Study Abroad program that has run for decades, and recently State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh alumna Nicole Casale, who undertook a Study Abroad program at ICMS in 2018, has been appointed Regional Manager-North America for ICMS.

And while the ICMS and SUNY Plattsburgh connection dates before current ICMS CEO and President Dr Dominic Szambowski’s current tenure at ICMS, it was at SUNY Plattsburgh that Szambowski started his academic career.

Despite having received offers from several institutions in the United States in 1980. Szambowski chose to study at SUNY Plattsburgh for the sense of community evident at the institution. He made the most of his time there and was a student athlete and Resident Assistant.

Szambowski said the student recruitment team impressed him with their ability to connect and care. It is no coincidence that under Szambowski’s leadership at ICMS these are elements interwoven into the ethos of the career-focused higher education institute located in Northern Beaches, NSW, Sydney.

Szambowski graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a Master of Science (Education) as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study [CAS], Counselling in 1987. While he would later return to Australia to complete his PhD in Education at the University of Sydney (2005-2011) and continue to establish his academic career in senior management roles throughout Australia, Malaysia, Switzerland and the United States, the SUNY connection would continue during his tenure as head of ICMS.

He added that ICMS’ connection to his alma mater has meant that he shows special interest in the Study Abroad students from SUNY Plattsburgh. “I had a great time there – it is a very special place. I was a proud ‘Cardinal’ and will always support my alma mater,” he said.

Recently, SUNY Plattsburgh student Cybil Quarcoo completed her Study Abroad program at ICMS, and enjoyed a positive internship experience at the Sebel Manly, assisting with the Social Media, Event Organisation and Front Office duties.

She has since returned to SUNY Plattsburgh, and ICMS looks forward to welcoming the next American exchange student on to campus to reinforce decades of mutually beneficial and friendly relations between the two institutions.

“ICMS and SUNY Plattsburgh have a long-standing relationship which we are really proud of. The students we have had out here from SUNY have really embraced the fun and energetic Aussie lifestyle and are always popular with the other students,” ICMS Associate Vice President – International Development Team Don Shiell said.
